Will He Ever Stop? UFLI Foundations Lesson 123
Practice Words
Dr. Can Do has a problem. Well, Dr. Can Do has lots of problems. Cold floors! Cold air at every window! Walls that are just... plain. 'Look at this rug,' he says in his snug cottage. He points at the floor. 'I made it from sheep wool. Soft as a cloud. Very cosy.' He taps his hammer. 'Just think if every home had one.'
He goes straight to the farm. A flock of sheep stands behind a wooden fence. One black sheep is stuck between two white ones, looking very cross about it. He rolls up his sleeves. 'Right. I will shear the lot.' He grabs his clippers and gets to work. Five minutes later, he has done just one sheep and his arms feel like jelly. Lots more sheep stand waiting. 'There must be a better way,' he puffs. His eyes go wide. 'A machine!'
So he builds one. Of course he does. The sheep stand in glass pens inside a cosy barn, with lanterns between each one to keep them at ease. A trusty machine hums along, gathering wool while the sheep just stand there looking bored, which is a sheep's best thing to do. He swaps them in and out. Soon he has big piles of wool, red and white and brown and black. 'Done!' he says. Then he stops. 'Wait... not done yet.'
'That is too much work for one man,' says Jill, catching up on the village path. 'I can do it,' says Dr. Can Do. Jill shakes her head. 'Three days with no sleep! Sleepy men do sloppy work. Hire a man. A shepherd. Build a proper Wool Shop and let him run it.' He grins. 'A shop! A big shop! That is a very grand plan!'
The sun is not even up, and he is hammering. Bang. Bang. Bang-bang-bang. He paces across the dirt, planning and muttering. 'Walls go up. Roof on top. Racks, racks, more racks.' By sunrise, he has a sturdy frame up. By lunch, he has the walls. By dinner, he has the roof, the door, and a sign that says Wool Shop in big bold letters. 'Done!' he says. Then he stops. 'Well. Not quite done yet.'
A man peeks inside the shop. He sees the loom, the lanterns, and the huge pile of bright red wool. His eyes go wide. 'Can I have this job?' he asks. 'Hired!' says Dr. Can Do, before the man can even finish asking. The new shepherd gets to work. When Jill brings him a bundle of wool, he smiles and presses a shiny green gem into her hand. 'Pay,' he says with a wink. From the doorway, Dr. Can Do has a grin so big his lip hair goes all wavy.
He leans on the Wool Shop wall and watches the shepherd inside. The stocky shepherd gathers wool from the sheep in their big pen, stacking bundle after bundle on a growing pile. It is working. It is really, truly working. The shepherd has it all in hand. For the first time in weeks, Dr. Can Do has nothing to fix. Nothing to build. Nothing to make better. He stands still for about four seconds. Then his fingers start tapping on his hammer.
Back in his cottage, he looks around. Bright paintings on the walls. A soft, silky rug on the floor. Every home in the village, snug and cosy. He should be happy. He should sit and rest. But no. He looks out the window with that look. The look that means a new project. 'I have stacks of wool left,' he says. 'Enough to build a giant windmill! Think of the power! Think of the...' From outside, Jill calls in. 'Take a holiday, Dr. Can Do!' He grins. 'Not done yet!'
