The Best Stuff in the World UFLI Foundations Lesson 97
Practice Words
Jim ran fast down the path with his pup ahead of him. 'Jim! Come quick!' Len called. Jim's pal waved them over with a big grin. When Len said 'come quick,' it was always good.
Len held up a shiny red toy boat. 'My dad got me this, and it floats on real water!' Jim's mouth fell open and his pup just looked up. Jim wanted that boat. He wanted something even better.
'That is nothing!' Jim said. 'I have the best stuff in the world! Way better than that boat!' The words flew out like a burp. Len and Jim's pal did not think it was true. 'I will bring it all tomorrow! You will see!'
Back home, Jim went to his toy box. He found a rubber frog, a red ball with a dent, and an old game with bits missing. His pup was peeking in too. 'This is bad,' Jim said. Len would tease him tomorrow.
Then Jim had a big plan. His fist shot up high. 'Grandpa, Gran, and Dad have loads of cool stuff! Plants, wool, games!' His pup's tail wagged so fast. 'Come on, boy. Time to raid the house!'
First stop: Grandpa's garden. Grandpa grew the best plants in town. Jim took a big one, with leaves like green plates. 'Len will like this!' Jim said. He ran off with his pup right behind. One down, more to go.
Next: Gran's wool basket. Jim took a bowl of wool and twine. Gran could fix it all. Torn dresses, broken kite strings, even a doll's arm! 'If it is good for Gran, it is good for Len!' Jim said. His pup pawed at the wool.
In the living room, Jim saw Dad's best game. Every weekend, Dad played it with his pals. They would yell about it for a long time! 'If grown-ups like it this much, it must be cool!' Jim said. He put the box under his arm.
Jim's sister Jill had loads of books. Jim took a big stack. The top one had a fox on it. Jill had read it to him three times. 'Best story ever!' Jim said aloud. His pup had a box stuck on its head like a robot. Jim did not even look.
Last stop: Mum's room. Jim tried a bit of everything. Lipstick. A big floppy hat. Red high heels three sizes too big! He looked at himself and had to giggle. His pup sat next to him in a yellow scarf, like a tiny queen. Perfect!
The next day, Len and Jim's pal came to see Jim's stuff. Len pushed the floppy hat back in the trunk. 'This is your mum's, Jim.' Jim's pal set the plant in too. 'And that's your grandpa's.' One by one, they put it all back. 'None of this is yours,' Len said. Jim's cheeks went hot. Len was right.
Then came a scream. 'Where is my perfume?' Mum stood by the table, looking at the empty spot. Jim, Len, and Jim's pal froze. They had left one thing behind.
Jim's pal looked under the bed. Just dust and an old sock. Len looked in the cabinet. Nothing! 'It is lost!' Jim yelled. But behind the seat, Jim's pup held its nose to the floor. Its tail began to wag.
The pup nudged its nose under the seat. There it was! The little glass bottle, cool on the floor. 'Yes!' Jim scooped up his pup. Len and his pal smiled wide. 'See?' Jim said with a grin. 'I do have the best thing in the world!'
