Sail East! UFLI Foundations Lesson 86
Practice Words
The sea is a vast biome. It flows on and on, far past the coast. Sail any way you like, and you will always find more sea. Above the water is pale sky. Beneath the surface, a big wild world is waiting for you to explore.
The sea cuts the land into chunks. Where land pokes above the water, a bit of land forms. Some bits of land are narrow, with just a row of sand blocks. Others are so big you can make a home on them. Will you find a cosy bit of land, or will you keep on sailing?
Mild seas are shallow and full of life. Seagrass and kelp grow on the sandy floor below. Vivid tropical fish roam in yellow and red, and squid drift in the flowing water. Almost all sea mobs can live in this biome. It has more life than most sea biomes.
Cold seas are dark and deep. Below, the floor is gravel and dirt, not sand. The glow is low, and the cold water flows slowly. Not many mobs roam this far into the cold sea. Cod and squid do not mind. Swim deeper, and the water grows darker.
A frozen sea is a very cold place. Big chunks of ice float on the surface, and the water below is icy and dark. Snow falls on the ice, and the chill grows deep. Not much can survive in a frozen sea. Just squid and small fish can swim in the deep.
Shallow seas are home to coral reefs. The reefs glow with pink and yellow. Coral grows in many shapes: brain coral, tube coral, and fan coral. Tube coral is hollow inside. Coral is not a plant. Each coral is a tiny animal, and many grow together in big clusters called reefs.
Not all sea mobs are tame. A mob roams the deep and follows any swimmer who gets close. Zap! It fires a beam at them. In the dark, other sea mobs lurk in the shadows and attack any swimmer they find. The sea holds danger in every shadow. Swim fast.
Some sea mobs leave the water for a short time. Turtles lay their eggs on sandy beaches and then return to the sea. A small yellow fellow rests on the sand with them for a while. Then it floats back into the sea. The shore is close, but the sea is home.
The sea is home to a vast number of animals. Fish, squid, turtles, and coral all depend on clean water to live and grow. When the water is clean and safe, all of them thrive. The reef glows, and fish roam free. But something is off. Turn the page.
Real seas glow with life, just as the seas in Minecraft do. But real seas face real danger. Trash on the sand harms sea animals, and heat kills coral and harms the reef. It is sad to see, but we can act. The sea is vast and full of life. Let us keep it that way.
