Jill asked her friends if they had ever been to the Nether. 'I've been lots of times. It's the only place to find ancient debris if you want to make Netherite,' the mage replied. 'I could certainly do with some of that to make a pickaxe,' said Jill.
The mage thought a moment. 'I could make us a portal nearby if you want to go there. It's not too hard. I would need some obsidian though.' 'I could source that,' Dr Can Do piped in excitedly. 'I've wanted to study the fire walking creatures in that place since I was young.'
'They are called Striders,' the mage explained. 'You can ride them on the surface of lava.' Jill looked horrified. 'I hate lava. I can't imagine riding across it.' 'You won't like the Nether then,' warned the mage.
There was silence for a moment as each of them was lost in thought. 'I am sure I could make a machine to create bridges across the lava,' said Dr Can Do. Jill smiled. 'I bet you could,' she said.
They made a plan to gather the obsidian the next day. It filled the mage with excitement to have friends to go on adventures with. He could hardly wait, since this was going to be an exceptional journey.
The next evening, they met again to share their progress. 'The doctor showed me how to pour water onto the lava and dig out the obsidian,' Jill reported. 'And I've already placed the frame,' said the doctor. 'I heard that portals are noisy things, so I built it a little way from the village.'
The mage didn't sleep well that night. He was so excited about their adventure, even though he'd been to the Nether before. This would be his first time going with friends. And you never could tell what you would be walking into with a new portal.
He was ready as soon as the sun rose. He met his friends in the cave, where a nice, tall, obsidian rectangle stood waiting. 'Ok then, here we go,' he said, and recited a fire spell to wake the portal. One by one, they stepped through to The Nether.
