On the right side of the image, Alex stands at the edge of a body of water on a sandy bank, holding a fishing rod with a determined expression. The outdoor scene features a hilly, tree-covered landscape under a clear blue sky with sunlit daytime lighting. Sticks and crafting materials are visible on the grassy ground nearby, suggesting Alex has just assembled the rod. The left side of the image is plain green background, clear for text overlay.

Alex held up her brand-new rod and grinned. Three sticks. Two bits of string. One perfect rod. 'Steve!' she yelled. 'Last one in the water is a rotten old fish!'

On the left side of the image, Alex and Steve stand together on a sandy riverbank overlooking water below. Alex stands holding a fishing rod, looking ready to fish, while Steve stands beside her with empty hands and a neutral, slightly uncertain expression β€” he has no rod or supplies. The scene is set outdoors during daytime, with sunlight streaming down through a tall hillside of earth and stone behind them, and patches of grass visible along the terrain. The right ~40% of the image is plain green background suitable for text overlay.

Steve looked at Alex's rod. Then he looked down at his hands. Empty. 'Hang on,' he said. 'I wish I had a rod too.' Alex shrugged. 'So go make one! Sticks and string are all over the place.' She gave her line a swish into the water. 'I'll wait. But not for long.'

On the right side of the image, Steve stands on a bright sandy beach near the water's edge, looking down at a small scattered collection of block items on the ground β€” a few crafting materials including what appear to be stone, sand, and ore blocks. He has a neutral, slightly disappointed expression as he surveys the meagre supplies. The scene is set outdoors on a sunny day with blue sky and clouds, with ocean water and distant tree-covered islands visible in the background. The left side of the image is plain green background, clear for text overlay.

Steve ran to the beach where they kept their crafting stuff. His plan was to grab sticks and string, make a quick rod, and be back before Alex caught a single thing. But the pile was nearly bare. A few bits of stone. Some ore. Not one stick. 'Where did it all vanish to?' Steve said.

On the left side of the image, Steve stands on a sandy beach near the water's edge, looking out toward the ocean with a calm, thoughtful expression. He appears to be gazing across the water where a distant tree-covered island is visible, as if contemplating whether he needs to travel far. The scene is set outdoors on a bright, sunny day with blue skies and clear water lapping at the shoreline. The right side of the image is plain green background, clear for text.

Steve stared across the water at a far land dotted with trees. Lots of sticks over there. But that was a longish swim. There had to be something closer than that. 'I am not swimming all that way for one stick,' he said. 'That would be foolish.'

On the right side of the image, Steve is walking across a grassy, open area near a village, with a few small items scattered on the ground around him. He has a determined expression as he surveys the mostly empty terrain, suggesting the crafting resources have already been gathered. Behind him on the right, a Minecraft village with stone and wooden structures sits under a bright blue sky with fluffy white clouds, and green hills roll into the background. The left side of the image is plain green background reserved for text.

He tried the grass land by the town next. They always got good crafting stuff at this spot. Sticks, string, the lot. But the ground was picked clean. Not one scrap left. Steve's eye twitched. A kid had grabbed it all. A kid with a brand-new rod. How selfish!

On the left side of the image, Steve stands beside a stone bin structure, leaning forward and peering inside with an eager, curious expression. Inside the bin, an old fishing rod hangs on the wall among a few other items. The scene is set outdoors on a grassy hillside with dirt and grass blocks, under a bright daytime sky. The right ~40% of the image is plain mint-green background, clear for text overlay.

Then Steve spotted an old stone bin tucked into the hillside. He leaned in for a look. He did not wish for much. And there, hanging on the wall like it had been waiting for him, was a rod! 'Yes!' Steve grabbed it and punched the air.

On the right side of the image, Steve stands outdoors in a grassy area next to a wooden and stone building, holding an old, worn fishing rod in his hand with a determined but slightly concerned expression. The rod looks weathered and fragile. The scene is set during daytime under a partly cloudy sky, with a wooden fence and rolling green hillside visible in the background. The left side of the image is plain green background reserved for text.

He held the rod up to the light. The string was thinnish. The stick was cracked. One good tug and the thing would snap in two. Steve sighed. 'Better than nothing. Just.' He tucked it under his arm and kept looking. Sticks and string had to be out there in the grass.

On the left side of the image, Steve stands in a wide, open grassy field dotted with red flowers and tall grass, looking slightly downward with a disappointed, searching expression as he wanders through the landscape. The outdoor scene is set under an overcast, cloudy sky, conveying a sense of unsuccessful searching. The right ~40% of the image is plain green background, clear for text overlay.

He looked far and wide. He checked the tall grass. He even shook the flowers, just in case. Nothing. Nothing. And more nothing. Clouds rolled in. Steve was getting peckish. That old rod was starting to look like his one and only hope.

Page 9
On the right side of the image, Steve stands at the edge of a large rectangular hole dug into blocky, Minecraft-style dirt and earth, looking down into it with a wary, cautious expression. A broken fishing rod is visible sticking up from the bottom of the hole. Green grass borders the top edges of the pit. The left side is plain mint-green background suitable for text overlay.

Then he spotted something poking up from a hole in the ground. A second rod! Steve jumped down to grab it. But this one was even worse than the first. Cracked right down the middle, barely holding on. 'Come on!' Steve groaned. Two rods, and not one of them could catch a sluggish fish.

On the left side of the image, Steve is walking forward across a grassy field, holding a fishing rod in each hand at his sides, with a tired but determined expression. The scene is set outdoors during sunset, with warm golden light on the horizon and soft clouds in the sky, suggesting it will be night before long. Red flowers dot the green landscape behind him. The right ~40% of the image is plain mint-green background, clear for text overlay.

The sun was sinking. Steve trudged home with a broken rod in each hand. Two bits of rubbish. Zero luck. One very long day. Alex was going to laugh her head off.

Page 11
On the right side of the image, Alex stands indoors at a crafting table, leaning forward with an excited, bright-eyed expression as she works on crafting. Two old fishing rods sit on the table in front of her. The scene is set inside a wooden house with a plank ceiling, windows showing greenery outside, a bookshelf against the wall, and a blue floor. A furnace sits nearby below the crafting table. The left ~40% of the image is plain mint-green background for text overlay.

But when Alex saw the rods, she did not laugh. Her eyes went big and wide. 'Steve. Steve! Give me those!' She snatched them up and rushed to her crafting table, fingers flying. 'This bit is still good. And this bit. Not rubbish at all. It will work just fine!'

Page 12
On the left side of the image, Alex stands inside a wooden cabin, holding a brand-new fishing rod in her hand with a proud, satisfied expression. The indoor scene features a cosy room with wooden plank walls and ceiling, bookshelves filled with colourful books along the back wall, windows looking out to a grey sky, and a crafting table or furnace to her left. The floor is a vibrant blue pattern. The right ~40% of the image is plain green background reserved for text.

Alex spun around holding a brand-new rod, built from the best bits of both old ones. She tossed it to Steve. 'There,' she said. 'Now we're even.' Steve grinned. 'Even? I have been at this all day. I will win.' Alex grabbed her own rod and dashed for the door. 'Biggest fish wins. Ready... go!'
