How Far Can Vines Grow? Jolly Phonics · Step 3, Unit 7: /oa/ mixed
Practice Words
Vines like to stretch and grow. Some creep low, with wide green leaves and curly stems. Others go up a branch and reach for the sky. Vines twist round and grip on tight!
Vines can go high up a tree trunk or hang low from a branch. They grow a long way, and leaves, flowers, and food sprout as they go. Can you spot a tree with vines all round the trunk?
Many vines grow flowers and food, like squash and beans. The flowers bloom. They are so bright that bees fly in for a sip! Then the flowers drop, and food swells in that spot.
We plant vines to go up an arch or a fence. The bright flowers look so nice! But vines grow fast. They can take over a hut, a tree, or a yard. We must trim vines, or they harm what we like.
Some vines grow all round a tree and take it over. Thick vines block the sunlight from the leaves below. They soak up all the rain in the soil. With no food and no light, the tree grows weak, drops its leaves, and may die.
Some vines cling on with little curls. As the vine grows, each curl reaches out. It twists round a stem or a stake. When a curl grips tight, it hangs on for life!
A vine can split in two at a fork in a tree. Each part goes up its own branch to reach for sunlight and room to grow. That way, one vine can grow twice as big!
Some vines grow food on a farm. Melon vines creep low, and big round melons rest in the wide green leaves. We mow a path, so we can get to the melons and pick them.
Some vines grow food down in the soil! The leaves soak up sunlight up top. Then the food flows down to the roots. That is how sweet roots grow big and plump below us.
When vines grow free, with no one to trim them, they can take over a hillside. They creep up fences and trees. Vines from a far off land can grow fast and crowd out the plants that live there. That is why we must trim them, before they take over the land.
Vines come in so many shapes and sizes! Some grow food, some grow flowers, and some grow leaves far and wide. When you are on a road, by a farm, or out where plants grow free, see how many vines you can spot.
