Dude, No Rod? Jolly Phonics · Step 2, Unit 6: long vowels
Practice Words
Alex is at the water with her rod. The rod is complete! 'Come, Steve!' she yells. 'Come and fish!'
Steve stands by the water with Alex. But he is glum. He needs a rod. 'Make one, dude!' Alex tells Steve. 'Use sticks and string.'
Steve runs to the sand bank to check the stuff there. But there are just stone blocks in the sand. No sticks. No string. 'These blocks are no use!' he moans.
Steve gazes across the water. There are trees on that land. 'No,' he groans. 'That is an extreme swim. It is too far.'
Steve treks to the grass by the huts. He scans and scans. The grass is empty too. Steve fumes. 'No sticks! This is so rude!'
Then Steve peeks in a stone bin. A rod hangs inside! 'Yes!' Steve yells. 'Such luck! It is a fluke!' He grabs the rod.
But the rod is worn. The string is frail, and there is a crack in the stick. 'It is crude,' Steve moans. 'But it is the best I can get.'
Steve hunts in the grass. He checks the red plants. No sticks at all. Steve is glum. 'This hunt is a complete fail,' he moans.
Then Steve spots a rod in a pit! He jumps in to grab it. But this rod is split. 'These rods are no good!' Steve groans.
The sun dips. Steve treks home with a rod in each hand. Both rods are crude. It is a long, glum commute home.
Alex sees the rods. 'Steve! I need these!' she yells. She rushes to the craft desk. 'This bit is good. And this bit! I can use these!'
Alex lifts up a fresh rod. It is complete! Alex grins. 'There, Steve! Come and compete with me! The best fish wins!'
