On the right side of the image, Allie sits on the floor of a cosy indoor room, kneeling and holding up a framed photograph with a delighted, open-mouthed smile. She has a round face, large black eyes, light/fair skin, and shoulder-length brown hair. She wears a light purple/lavender short-sleeved dress. Scattered around her on a striped rug are open picture books, alphabet blocks, a small teddy bear, and a yarn ball. A bookshelf stands to the left, and a wooden side table on the far right holds another framed photo and a small potted plant, with a window above letting in warm daylight through green curtains. The framed photo Allie is holding shows a woman with short hair and a big, pretty smile, and another framed photo of the same woman sits on the side table.

Sally finds the photo tucked between a teddy bear and a stack of books. 'Oh!' she gasps. 'Look at Mum's hair! It is so short and so pretty!' She holds the photo up next to her own face and squints. Same eyes. Same smile. But Sally's hair is long and floppy, and Mum's is short and adorable. 'I want hair just like that,' Sally whispers. And Sally has a plan.

Page 2
On the left side of the image, Allie is kneeling on a striped mat on the floor. She has a round face, large black eyes, light/fair skin, and shoulder-length brown hair — now being snipped at with a small pair of red craft scissors she holds above her head with both hands. She has a cheerful, determined smile. She wears a light purple/lavender short-sleeved dress. Dark brown hair clippings float and scatter through the air around her. The right side of the image is plain, warm-toned background.

She finds her craft scissors in the art box. The red ones with the bumpy handles. Sally can cut paper. She can cut string. She even cut a worm in two once, by mistake. Sorry, worm. How hard can hair be? Snip, snip, snip! Dark bits of hair fly all around her. Sally grins. This is doable. She is almost a barber already.

Page 3
On the right side of the image, Allie stands or sits holding up a small round light-blue hand mirror, gazing into it with a calm, anticipatory expression — the moment just before she sees herself. She has a round face, large black eyes, light/fair skin, and her brown hair is now badly cut — chopped into uneven clumps of different lengths with ragged edges. She wears a light purple/lavender short-sleeved dress. She is near a green polka-dotted stool. The scene is set indoors against a warm, soft beige background.

Sally picks up her little blue mirror and holds it high. Her incredible new look is ready. Short. Perfect. Just like the photo. She can not wait. 'Time to see the new me,' she says. She flips her head like an actor on a show. She looks. She blinks. She looks again.

Page 4
On the left side of the image, Allie is shown from the shoulders up with a dramatically upset expression — mouth wide open in a wail or cry, eyebrows furrowed in distress. One hand is raised near her chin in a gesture of shock or dismay. She has a round face, large black eyes, light/fair skin, and her brown hair is horridly cut — poking out in clumps of all different lengths with ragged, uneven edges. She wears a light purple/lavender short-sleeved dress. The background is a warm, plain beige/cream tone with the right side left open. The scene has soft, warm indoor lighting.

'Oh no!' Her hair sticks out in clumps. Big clumps. Tiny clumps. One bit near her ear is so short it is almost gone. The other side flops down like a wet leaf. This is horrible. Sally wants to glue it back on. She wants to go back in time. She wants to take it all back. 'Fine,' she says in a very small voice. 'Fine, fine, fine. I can fix this.'

Page 5
On the right side of the image, Allie is kneeling on the floor with a red bowl of noodles upturned on her head, noodles draped over her badly-cut brown hair and scattered on the ground around her. She has a round face, large black eyes, light/fair skin, and wears a light purple/lavender short-sleeved dress. She holds her small round light-blue hand mirror in front of her face, peering into it with a surprised, wide-eyed expression. The scene is set indoors against a soft pink background with a pale floor.

In the kitchen, Sally finds a bowl of cold noodles. Long, slick, pretty noodles. 'Noodles look like hair,' she says. That seems sensible enough. 'Nobody would even notice.' She turns the bowl over on her head. Noodles slide over her ears and drip down her nose. She grabs the mirror and peeks. Everybody would notice. And now all of her head is soaking wet.

Page 6
On the left side of the image, Allie stands in the foreground with a dismayed, open-mouthed expression, holding green bean pods on top of her head with both hands raised — the beans drape down like wild, tangled hair over her badly-cut brown hair. She has a round face, large black eyes, light/fair skin, and wears a light purple/lavender short-sleeved dress. In the upper-left corner, Mum, Dad, and Sister are grouped together, all laughing and amused at Allie's bean-hair attempt. Mum has chin-length wavy brown hair, large round black eyes, light/fair skin, and wears a coral-red short-sleeved V-neck top and blue jeans. Dad is stocky with warm medium-brown skin, large round white eyes with black pupils, a wide round nose, a full curly dark-brown beard and matching curly dark-brown hair, wearing a light blue short-sleeved button-up shirt with a front chest pocket and dark navy-blue pants — he holds a book. Sister has golden-blonde hair in two short pigtails with pink hair ties, large dark eyes, light/fair skin, and wears an orange short-sleeve dress over a pink t-shirt — she clutches a pillow, grinning with delight. The scene is set indoors against a plain, light background. The right ~40% of the image is empty white space.

'Noodles are too floppy,' Sally decides. 'Too bendable. I need stiff hair.' She finds green beans in the fridge and drapes them over her head, one by one, like long wild hair. Just then her family walks in. Dad snorts. Her little sister points and grins. Mum presses her lips together very hard. Then all three of them burst out laughing. 'It is not funny!' Sally cries. But a green bean slides off her nose, and truly, it is a little bit funny.

Page 7
On the right side of the image, Allie stands in the foreground holding her small round light-blue hand mirror up to her face, looking dismayed and uncomfortable. She has a round face, large black eyes, light/fair skin, and wears a light purple/lavender short-sleeved dress. Her badly-cut brown hair is covered in droopy spinach leaves arranged like a messy wig on top. In the upper-right corner, Mum and Dad stand together laughing heartily at Allie's spinach hairstyle. Mum has chin-length wavy brown hair, large round black eyes, light/fair skin, and wears a coral-red short-sleeved V-neck top and blue jeans. Dad is stocky with warm medium-brown skin, large round white eyes with black pupils, a wide round nose, a full curly dark-brown beard and matching curly dark-brown hair, wearing a light blue short-sleeved button-up shirt with a front chest pocket and dark navy-blue pants — he holds his belly laughing. Sister is just below them, also laughing with delight and holding a red ball. Sister has golden-blonde hair in two short pigtails with pink hair ties, large dark eyes, light/fair skin, and wears an orange short-sleeve dress over a pink t-shirt. The scene is set indoors against a plain, light background.

'Third time lucky,' Sally says. She grabs a bag of spinach and piles the leaves on top of her head like a big green hat. She pats them down, stands up straight, and lifts her mirror. Behind her, Dad laughs so hard he holds his belly. Her sister giggles into her red ball. Even Mum wipes tears from her eyes. The laughing is unstoppable. 'Stop laughing!' Sally yells. 'It is my new look!' But the spinach is going limp, and her head is getting more itchy by the second.

Page 8
On the left side of the image, Allie is crouched and hiding behind a large red couch on the floor of a living room, with only the top of her head and her large black eyes peeking out — her badly-cut brown hair visible above the couch. A pair of red craft scissors lies on the carpet nearby. The scene is set indoors in a cosy living room with a window, green floral curtains, and a small wooden table visible in the upper portion of the image. On the right side, Mum stands across the room calling out to Allie with a concerned expression. Mum has chin-length wavy brown hair, large round black eyes, light/fair skin, and wears a coral-red short-sleeved V-neck top and blue jeans.

That is it. No more noodles. No more beans. No more spinach. Sally crawls behind the big red couch and makes herself as small as possible. If nobody can see her hair, then her hair does not exist. It is her best plan yet. 'Sally?' Mum calls softly from across the room. 'Come out now, dear.' 'No,' says Sally. 'I live in this spot now.'

Page 9
On the right side of the image, the whole family is gathered on and around a red couch in a cosy living room. Mum sits on the couch smiling broadly, holding up a small round light-blue hand mirror toward Allie. Mum has shoulder-length dark brown hair, large round black eyes, light/fair skin, and wears a coral-red short-sleeved top, blue jeans, and dark blue flat shoes. Allie sits beside Mum on the couch, looking delighted with a big grin as she sees herself in the mirror, one hand resting on her cheek. Allie has a round face, large black eyes, light/fair skin, bare feet, and her short brown hair now has a red hairband on it. She wears a light purple/lavender short-sleeved dress with a small diamond pattern. Sister sits on the left end of the couch, turned toward the others and smiling happily. Sister has golden-blonde hair in two short pigtails with pink hair ties, large dark eyes, light/fair skin, and wears an orange short-sleeve top over a pink t-shirt with pink leggings and purple-and-white sneakers. Dad is perched on the arm of the couch behind them, laughing with his eyes closed. Dad is stocky with light/fair skin, large round white eyes with black pupils, a wide round nose, a full curly dark-brown beard and matching curly dark-brown hair, wearing a light blue short-sleeved button-up shirt with a front chest pocket and dark navy-blue pants, with bare feet. On the lower right, a small coffee table with a pink/lavender top holds a framed family photo and a second empty frame, and a round green polka-dot cushion sits on the floor nearby. The left portion of the image is plain light blue background. The hairband is red and has a little bow on it.

Mum scoops her up all the same and carries her to the couch. Dad sits on the arm. Her little sister snuggles in close. 'I made a mess of it,' Sally says. 'I do not look like the photo at all.' Mum puts her hand in her pocket. Out comes a red hairband with a little bow. She slips it gently on Sally's head and holds up the mirror. Sally looks. She blinks. She looks again. 'Oh,' she whispers. The girl in the mirror looks kind of adorable.

Page 10
On the left side of the image, Allie stands facing forward with her eyes closed and a big, delighted smile, cupping both hands under her chin in a pleased, contented pose. She has a round face, large black eyes (closed), light/fair skin, and short badly-cut brown hair with a red headband with a red bow and gold flower accent. She wears a light purple/lavender short-sleeved dress. The background is plain white, leaving the right side completely open for text.

Sally closes her eyes and smiles so hard her cheeks hurt. Short hair. Red hairband. Pretty bow. She does not look like Mum's old photo. She looks like Sally. And Sally looks remarkable. But next time she wants a haircut? Mum can handle the scissors. And those noodles are going back in the bowl where they belong.
