Ned had one aim when he came to this land. He wanted a home. He cut planks and made a shed. Small clumps of plants lay on the hill all the way to the far end. 'It is perfect,' said Ned, standing in his shed with a big grin. 'This is the last shed I will ever make.'

On the right side of the image, Ned stands inside a wooden shed, facing forward with a surprised, attentive expression. The shed interior has wooden plank walls, a crafting table, a torch mounted on the wall providing warm light, and a patterned rug on the floor. Through an open doorway behind Ned, green grass and flowers are visible outside in daylight. The Book floats in the air near the centre-right, its cream-coloured pages open wide, its large round bright blue eyes and small smiling mouth visible on the open pages, positioned as if speaking to Ned. Inside the shed, The Book lifted up with its pages open wide. 'If you want to make things, you must dig,' it said. 'Dig?' Ned held up his hands. 'My hands still hurt from punching all those logs!' 'Not with your hands, Ned,' said The Book with a smile. 'I will train you to make your very first spade.'

Page 3
On the left side of the image, Ned stands inside a wooden cabin or shelter, holding up a brand new wooden shovel with both hands and grinning proudly. A lit torch is mounted on the wall to Ned's left, illuminating the interior. The Book floats nearby with its cream-coloured pages open, its large round bright blue eyes looking at Ned approvingly, and a tan quill feather pen in its right hand. A workbench with leftover wood planks and sticks is visible nearby. The setting is indoors within a blocky, Minecraft-style wooden structure, with a window or opening in the back wall revealing greenery outside during daytime. The right ~50% of the image is plain light background with no detail.

The Book turned to a page with a plan. 'Get some planks and sticks, then place them this way,' it said. Ned lined up the parts at the table, and the parts fit with a snap. His spade was made! Ned held up the spade with a grin and said, 'I made a spade! I am the best!' 'The plan did the job,' said The Book.

On the right side of the image, Ned stands on a sunny grassy hillside holding a wooden shovel, turning it over in his hands with a slightly uncertain, curious expression. Red flowers and tulips dot the green grass around him. The Book stands nearby next to the small wooden shed, its cream-coloured pages open, brown hardcover spine visible, standing on its two short blocky brown legs, with its large round bright blue eyes looking at Ned as if giving instructions, and a tan quill feather pen in its right hand. The outdoor scene has bright blue skies, lush green trees, and warm sunshine. The left ~40% of the image is plain light background for text overlay.

Ned marched into the sunny day, holding his spade up like a flag. Then he came to a halt. He turned the spade over. He held it with the flat end at the top. 'Which end do I dig with?' he asked. 'The flat end,' said The Book. 'Let us aim for the sand. It is nice and soft.'

Page 5
On the left side of the image, Ned kneels on a sandy beach, pushing his wooden shovel into the sand with an excited, thrilled expression. A hole in the sand is visible at his feet where he has scooped out a big clump of sand. Beside him at ground level, The Book peeks up from the sand — its cream-coloured open pages visible with large round bright blue eyes and a cheerful grin, its brown hardcover edges partially buried in the surface. The scene is set outdoors on a bright sunny day with blue sky and white clouds, with colourful flowers (red poppies and pink blooms) and green bushes visible in the background behind Ned. The right ~40% of the image is plain light background reserved for text.

Ned pushed his spade into the sand as hard as he could. A big clump came up and left a hole in the sand. Ned stared and did not say a thing. 'That,' he whispered, 'was the best thing I ever did in my life.' 'You dug up one clump of sand, Ned,' said The Book. 'Can I dig a lot more?' Ned asked. 'Yes,' said The Book. 'Stay with me.'

Page 6
On the right side of the image, Ned stands at the entrance of a big hole he has carved into the side of a grass-topped dirt hill, wiping his forehead with one hand while holding his wooden shovel in the other, looking tired but pleased. Loose dirt and scattered soil chunks are visible around the excavation site. The outdoor scene shows green grass on the ground and a bright daytime sky. The Book led Ned to a hill of dirt. Ned did not wait. He dug into the side and dug and dug. Dirt rained on his face. He made a hole so big he could walk inside. Ned wiped his face and smiled. 'I think I was born to dig.'

Page 7
On the left side of the image, Ned stands at the edge of a deep rectangular pit he has dug into a hillside, viewed from a slightly elevated angle. He holds his wooden shovel and looks down into the hole with a puzzled, frustrated expression. Inside the pit, a big golden-orange stone block is embedded at the bottom, glowing with a warm yellow light. The Book stands on the ground near Ned at the rim of the excavation, its cream-coloured pages open, brown hardcover spine visible, standing on its two short blocky brown legs, looking toward Ned as if replying. The scene is outdoors in a Minecraft-style blocky aesthetic, with brown dirt walls forming the sides of the dig site and green grass visible along the surface edge. Ned hit something hard. Clang! It did not budge an inch. A big golden block lay at the base of the pit. 'My spade broke!' said Ned. 'The spade is fine, Ned,' said The Book. 'That is stone. A spade can not crack it.'

Page 8
On the right side of the image, Ned stands at the bottom of a rocky underground excavation, looking down at The Book with a curious expression. The scene is rendered in a blocky, voxel-style Minecraft-like aesthetic, with walls of brown and reddish-brown stone surrounding him. Near Ned's feet, The Book sits on the rocky ground, its cream-coloured pages open wide, brown hardcover spine and edges visible, its large round bright blue eyes looking up at Ned, standing on its two short blocky brown legs, with a tan quill feather pen in its right hand. Ned folded his arms and asked, 'A spade can dig sand and dirt, but not stone?' 'That is correct,' said The Book. 'That is bad,' said Ned. 'It is not so bad,' said The Book. 'There is a way to crack stone. You must use something sharp and hard.' Ned's face lit up. 'Back to the shed?' he asked.

Page 9
On the left side of the image, Ned kneels at a wooden workbench inside the shed, gripping pieces of wood as he shapes them, with a focused, determined expression. The shed interior has wooden plank walls, a wooden ceiling, and a window in the back showing greenery outside. The Book floats nearby with its cream-coloured pages open, showing a drawing of a pickaxe on its pages, its large round bright blue eyes visible, and a tan quill feather pen in its right hand. A lit torch on the wall illuminates the scene. The right ~40% of the image is plain light background.

Back in the shed, The Book displayed a fresh plan. Ned moved in close, squinting. 'So it is two sharp tips on a stick?' 'Yes, Ned.' 'Like a fang on a handle?' 'Just make it, Ned.' Ned got to work at the table, shaping the tips.

Page 10
On the right side of the image, Ned stands inside the wooden cabin, holding up a newly crafted wooden pickaxe with a proud, satisfied expression and a big grin. The Book hovers nearby at roughly table height, its cream-coloured pages open with its large round bright blue eyes and a knowing smile visible on the pages, and a tan quill feather pen in its right hand. A crafting table is visible in the foreground, and the wooden interior of the cabin frames the scene, with a window in the background showing greenery and daylight outside. Ned held it up and admired it. Two sharp tips on a long handle. It felt solid and strong. 'What is it called?' Ned asked. 'A pick,' said The Book. 'Can I crack stone with this?' 'Stone, and so much more,' said The Book with a wide smile. Ned was on his way.

Page 11
On the left side of the image, Ned stands inside a narrow tunnel carved into a brown earth and stone hillside, facing a cracked stone wall. He holds his wooden pickaxe mid-swing, striking the wall with a determined, excited expression. Cracks radiate outward from the point of impact on the stone surface like a spider's web, with chunks of rock beginning to break away. The right ~40% of the image is plain light background, clear of any detail.

Ned went back into the pit and faced the stone wall. He lifted his pick. 'This is it,' he said. He swung with all his strength. Crack! Cracks shot from the spot like rays, and chunks of stone fell. Ned gave a wide grin. 'I was born to dig,' he said.

Page 12
On the right side of the image, Ned sits on the ground inside a carved-out cave of brown stone blocks, his wooden pickaxe resting at his side, looking tired but happy with a satisfied smile. The cave is rough-hewn with blocky walls and lit by small glowing lanterns mounted on the stone. The Book floats near the cave entrance at the centre-left edge, its cream-coloured pages open, brown hardcover spine visible, its large round bright blue eyes looking in toward Ned with a knowing expression, and a tan quill feather pen in its right hand. The left ~40% of the image is plain light background for text overlay.

Ned cracked and carved until he had a big cave. Lanterns lit the walls. Stone blocks lay piled in stacks. Ned sat with his pick, smiling. 'Well dug, Ned,' said The Book. 'You will want all this stone.' 'For what?' said Ned. 'A grand fort!' said The Book. Ned lifted his pick. 'Dig, Ned, dig!'
