Anansi and the Fig Panic UFLI Foundations Lesson 67
Practice Words
The village has one big fig plant, and it is full of figs. But hornets sit on all of the figs, buzz, buzz, buzz.
The hornets sting! Old Grandmother Akosua drops a basket and runs fast. No figs for the kids. No figs at all.
Anansi looks up at the figs and the hornets. 'I have a plan,' says Anansi. 'A classic trick.'
Anansi hands cash to Kofi. 'Kofi, go to the big dip and hit the drum. Do not stop.' Kofi nods. He is content with the cash.
Then Anansi sits on a branch of the fig plant. 'Hornets,' he says, 'I have gossip. Big gossip.' In an instant, the lot go still.
'A lot of big insects sit in the big dip,' says Anansi. 'They mock this buzz.' The Hornet Queen is livid. 'Buzz a lot!' she yells. 'We are best!'
Bam, bam, bam! A distant drum taps from the big dip. It is Kofi, but the hornets do not see that.
'That lot mocks this buzz,' says Anansi. The Hornet Queen is so upset. 'Attack!' she yells. 'Go and buzz at them!'
The hornets cross the river and rush to the big dip. Kofi grabs the drum and sprints off. But nothing is in the big dip, nothing at all.
Anansi yells, 'Quick! Bring baskets and pots!' All rush in and pick figs, and Old Grandmother Akosua fills basket upon basket. But then a buzz hums from the river. The hornets!
Anansi grabs one last fat fig. The Hornet Queen gets to the fig plant, but not one fig is on it! Anansi grins and zips off on silk. A rapid exit.
At sunset the village has a splendid picnic. Kids dance, drums tap, and all munch figs and sip nut dish. Anansi grins, glad and full. What a fantastic trick! The hornets go off to a distant fig plant. Buzz, buzz, buzz. But not in this village!
