Anansi and the Black Rock UFLI Foundations Lesson 68
Practice Words
Anansi is on a path by a big rock. The rock is covered in thick, soft moss. 'What a strange rock,' he says, and in a moment he begins to doze.
Anansi wakes up flat on a soft bed. That rock is odd, he thinks. He says it twice, and twice he dozes off. In a moment, he sits up with a big grin. Anansi has a plan.
Anansi has a secret plan. He can trick the animals with the rock and take all their snacks. Off he trots to find Elephant.
'Elephant, come see this strange rock,' Anansi calls. Elephant looks at the rock and drops with a thud. Anansi grabs her big snack. The snack is stolen!
One by one, the animals doze by the rock. They wake up and blink. All the snacks have been taken. The rock just sits there, silent and still.
Bush Deer hides by a fig trunk. She is small and silent, and she sees it all. She sees Anansi trick Hornbill by the rock.
Bush Deer talks to the sad animals. 'Anansi stole the snacks,' she says. 'I can recall what he said by the rock.' Elephant sits and thinks and thinks.
Bush Deer has a plan. 'Hide, and I will trick Anansi,' she says. Elephant hides by a thin trunk, but Elephant is not small! The animals all depend on Bush Deer.
'Anansi, is this not a strange moss-covered rock?' asks Bush Deer. Anansi drops flat on the moss and begins to snore. The trick is a total win!
The animals get their snacks back. Even the small pal gets a snack. They sit by the rock and have a big picnic while Anansi naps.
Anansi wakes up and blinks. Elephant hands him a bit of the stolen snack. 'A trick can befall the one who tricks,' says Bush Deer. Anansi regrets his plot, but he munches the snack.
Now the animals walk the path in a big, glad pack. By the rock, they hush. No one says 'strange rock'! They protect their friends, and they split their snacks.
